More and more people are being classified as overweight, often obese and unhealthy, and the number of Heart Disease, Diabetes Type 2 and Cancer has risen instead of dropped in the last 30 years. In an attempt to halt this depressing trend, supplements and sports have been heavily promoted with little to no success.
Hippocrates, born in 460 BC in Greece, the founder of medicine and the greatest physician of his time, famously quoted ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’. However this seems to have been long forgotten as the general public continues to fuel their bodies with highly processed unnatural toxic foods whilst trying to correct the resulting dis-ease in the body with supplements that claim to eradicate the damage done. Why not be kind to your body in the first instance? Research has consistently shown that disease is directly related to what we eat and drink but we seem to ignore it and are surprised when we fall ill. On the other hand, we understand and take note that our cars will break down unless they are serviced regularly and require a certain type of fuel to function optimally so make sure they are serviced and fuelled with the appropriate fuel.
We need to go back to basics and think about what we put into our bodies if we want to live long, healthy, happy lives. Lack of time has become the justification for grabbing fast food, meals on the go prepared with preservatives and additives to keep it ‘fresh’, skipping meals and drinking coffee and a highly processed snack instead, all at the detriment of our health and wellbeing. This is because these foods are often nutrient poor and toxic. However, an apple is the fastest food you can get and contains nothing but pure nutrition and goodness, especially if organic…
We all know that we should be eating plenty of raw vegetables and fruit for optimum health, but let's face it, how many of us can honestly say we do? Our bodies are living organisms. From the moment life begins until it ceases, we depend on the "life element" in food to nourish, rejuvenate and support us. This "life element" comes from enzymes which, are destroyed by heat, and only exist in raw fruit and vegetables, not in cooked food, not in highly processed foods, not in most of the fast food that you can get your hands on these days.
In fact, would you believe that a whole foods, plant based diet and/or a diet rich in raw food would be able to prevent and even reverse disease? Yes, even diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, the three biggest killers in the developed world? Raw diets are being used as a very successful form of treatment to reverse ‘incurable’ diabetes all over the world, as chronicled in the documentary Raw for Thirty Days. Likewise, juicing is currently being used alongside other detoxification techniques with astounding success as an alternative treatment for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis at the Gerson Institute in California. The relationship between diet and disease is also well documented in books such as The China Study which is based on the most comprehensive study on nutrition ever conducted.
